Fishing shouldn't be complicated. Somehow it is. This beginner guide walks through the core loop of How to Fish โ€” what you're actually doing, what to buy first, and how to avoid the mistakes that stall new players in the first hour.

What You Actually Do in How to Fish

The official description sums it up: fish fish, kill fish, sell fish. You start with no gear and no weapons, earn money by catching and selling creatures, spend it on better rods, lures and weapons, and complete quests to fight bosses that unlock new islands. Along the way you're also collecting โ€” every creature has an encyclopedia entry, and every normal creature has a rare Drip variant to hunt.

Four systems matter from minute one:

  • Hunger. Eat clams (or later, fish) to keep it full. A hungry character is slower and fights worse.
  • Money. Everything good costs cash, and most of it comes from selling catches.
  • The encyclopedia (Tab). Tracks what you've caught, what's missing, and which quest items you still owe.
  • Quests. NPCs on every island hand out tasks that end in bosses. Quests are how you progress โ€” catching fish alone never unlocks an island.

The free rod is the best deal in the game. Everything after that costs money.

Your First 30 Minutes

  1. Eat a clam. They're on the beach. Fill the hunger meter first thing.
  2. Throw clams at the Lighthouse Keeper. He pays cash for them โ€” your first income with zero gear.
  3. Buy the Basic Fishing Rod for $3. Cast the free lure and catch Brown Crab and Shrimp. Kill them, sell them.
  4. Buy a knife and sharpen it at the anvil by the lighthouse door (damage โ†’ 20). Kills become much faster.
  5. Buy Hot Dog lures ($1) for Rock Crab and Lobster โ€” better value catches.
  6. Buy a Beer Can and give it to the Keeper. He returns it empty. Equip the empty can, cast, and the Spider Crab arrives for your first boss fight.

That loop โ€” catch, sell, upgrade, fight โ€” is the whole game. Every later island repeats it with better gear and meaner fish.

Skip the Beginner Boss Lure and Dynamite on Island 2 unless you're chasing collections โ€” neither is needed for the story.

Bait Basics

There are three kinds of bait in How to Fish, and mixing them up is the most common beginner mistake:

  • Lure tiers. Free โ†’ Beginner โ†’ Standard โ†’ Professional โ†’ Scientific. Each island's regular fish mostly use one tier; buy the tier before you sail.
  • Boss lures. Beginner/Standard/Professional/Scientific Boss Lures summon the optional mini-bosses (Sunfish, The Old Pike, Blue Shark, Tuna, Goblin Shark).
  • Quest baits. Unique items you earn from NPCs โ€” the Empty Beer Can (Spider Crab), Modified Leech (Giant Piranha), Carrot (Pufferfish), Tuna (Albatross) and Fish Bucket (Bowhead Whale). These can't be bought and can't be replaced.

The full breakdown, including where every bait comes from, lives in the bait & lures guide.

How Money Works

Every creature has a sell value (the fish database lists them all). Values range from $3 for a Brown Crab to $8,000 for the Bowhead Whale. Three multipliers make money snowball:

  • Trick shots โ€” landing trick shots pays extra on the catch.
  • Killstreaks โ€” chained kills build a multiplier.
  • The grill (1.5x) โ€” unlocked on Island 3 after beating the Blue Shark; cooked fish sell for 50% more, forever.

And one rule beats all of them: never sell quest drops. Boss meat, skeletons, fins and the Bowhead Whale's body are all needed by NPCs. Selling one can force you to re-summon and re-fight a boss.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Every mistake on this list is one someone already made for you.

  1. Searching for leeches in the water. They're on the forest floor. Ground only.
  2. Selling quest items. Boss drops are quest fuel, not income. Check your quest log before you sell anything unusual.
  3. Letting the boss's white bar drain. Escaped bosses restart at full health. Stay aggressive.
  4. Fishing instead of questing. Progress is quest-gated โ€” no amount of catching unlocks Island 2.
  5. Buying every lure tier you see. You only need the tier for your current island plus one boss lure when hunting mini-bosses.
  6. Thinking a landed fish is yours. Some catches can still escape if you don't finish them โ€” kill everything you hook before celebrating.
